Dr.Jayadeva Yogendra (President Of The Yoga Institute)
Dr. Jayadeva, born in 1929 was influenced and attracted to Yoga, right from his early childhood under the influence of his illustrious father Shri Yogendraji, the founder of The Yoga Institute and mother Smt. Sitadevi- a pioneer in teaching Yoga to women.

A brilliant student throughout, Dr. Jayadeva did his Masters in Samkhya and Yoga at Bombay University in 1952. He stood FIRST in First class and obtained several prizes. He continued his study and completed Ph D. in 1955. His illustrious guide is said to haveremarked that for the work Dr. Jayadeva had one, he should b awarded two Ph D. degrees. He then chose to become Lecturer in two classical ancient languages SANSKRIT and PRAKRIT. He was invited by the State Government to take over as Principal of Teachers Training Institute of Yoga in Mumbai.

Recognising his eminence in Yoga, the Central Government of India invited him to be on the Governing Body of Central Council Research in Indian Medicine in the year 1973.He continued medical research on Yoga for many years thereafter. He was invited as Guest Lecturer by

medical research on Yoga for many years thereafter. He was invited as Guest Lecturer by various universities overseas including at Melbourne, Frankfurt, Nuremburg, Geneva, Bilibad, Karachi. He was appointed as Editor for “Yoga Today” published by Macmillan.

In 1987, he set up first Museum on Yoga at the Institute. Since taking charge at the Institute, he has concentrated in formalising ancient knowledge for common householder and laymen by publishing various books in different languages. For the serious students he has published 3 volumes on Yoga Encyclopaedia and it is a Bible for the students of various Teachers Training Courses regularly conducted at the Institute. He took keen interest in setting up series of health camps for dealing with various ailments in a holistic yogic way. These camps of 2 days duration are held every month at the Institute.
He is the Editor of the Institute’s Journal, “Yoga & Total Health” published since 1933. His editorials and articles are very brief and sharp and make the readers to ponder over it for long. He is a man of extremely few words and still manages the affairs of the Institute. Students at the Institute draw constant inspiration from his wisdom, compassion, wit and unflinching commitment to truth.

 

Smt.Hansaji Jayadeva Yogendra (Director - The Yoga Institute)
Smt. Hansaji Jayadeva Yogendra was born on 8th October, 1947 to Shri Jitendra Phulchand Patni and Shrimati Tara Patni of Indore. Hansaji was educated in Bombay where she attended St. Xavier’s High School, Primary section, then Nanavati Girls High School, a Gujarati school, where education was based on Gandhian principles. She graduated in Science with Chemistry and Zoology from the Mithibai College and her B.G.L. from the Government Law College.

A special feature of Hansaji's life, from the age of twelve, was her ability to sit in Yogic posture for long periods of time without external distraction. Sometimes she would stay for many hours a day in Self-study, observing her breath, synchronizing it with heart rhythms and controlling the mind. She had no desire for frivolous entertainment and was content to practice Swadhyaya (self-study) in her spare time. She acquired proficiency in playing the Sitar along with training in Hindustani Classical vocal music. Her devotion to the Classical arts even today, is well known.

 
Smt.Hansaji Yogendra

Hansaji after her marriage to the Director of The Yoga Institute Dr.Jayadeva Yogendra, was instrumental in making radical changes in the work done by the Institute- expansion of the Ladies Wing; regularizing the monthly Seven-day Residential Camp and the 21 day Better Living Course, more special classes for Women, Children’s Camp, Couples Classes, Pregnancy and prenatal and post natal classes and the most recent one is the Menopause Camp. Another feature of her teaching is a strong focus on Isvarapraridhana (surrender to the will of God), which allows the individual to face any situation in life.

Smt. Hansaji Jayadeva has been selected "Woman of the Year 2000”, by American Biographical Institute, U.S.A. for her outstanding accomplishment and the noble example she has set for her peers and entire community.

At present, she is the Director of The Yoga Institute and the President of The International Board of Yoga. She is perhaps best known throughout the nation as the charming lady who is the Yoga expert in the popular television series 'Yoga for Better Living’, first televised in 1980 which was judged the best programme of this time. But unlike many 'stars' she just does not act the part on the screen but lives what she preaches.

She was recognized for her contribution to Women's Health through the award presented by SPARC. She has been recently selected as "Woman of the Year 2000" by the American Biographical Institute, U.S.A for her outstanding accomplishment and the noble example she has set for her peers and entire country. She is a much sort after National and International speaker. She has conducted several seminars and lecture tours in India and in Europe, Australia, Canada, Pakistan, Hong Kong and United States of America

She has authored many Yoga books including Yoga Daily Planner - Heart Care, Dincharya, Yogic Life-Cure of Asthma and Bronchitis, Yogic Life-Control of Diabetes, Yoga of Caring, Thoughts on the Gita and Insights through Yoga. Hansaji has a regular feature on Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra and The Bhagvad Gita in the Journal of The Yoga Institute (Yoga and Total Health) now in its 50th volume.

Recently she was invited by the National Council for Education Research and Training along with Dr. Jayadeva to advice on formulating a Yoga education syllabus for schools nationwide.

What is truly remarkable is the fact that all of her achievements have been made within the confines of suburban Bombay, and not as some might deem necessary, in the Himalayas. She is the embodiment of Indian Womanhood and an inspiration to all who visit The Yoga Institute.
