Editorial by Dr. Jayadeva Yogendra

Mudra is symbolic unlike an asana which is taken as more physical and therapeutic like Pavanamuktasana to relieve flatus from stomach or bowel. There are many more asanas but only twenty-five are Mudras mentioned in Gheranda Samhita (which also include the Bandhas) ten in Siva Samhita and ten in Hathayoga Pradipika.

Unfortunately except in recent works on Yoga, details about many Mudras are not available. This has led to many claims on behalf of Mudras and a mix up in details. Yoga Mudra for example is an asana as well as a Mudra.

The real issue here is that Mudra works more on attitudes, whereas asana highlights the physical advantages. The Mudra practices were originally so conceived that certain sensitive zones were activated during the performance of the Mudra techniques. One may read about description of Kheeari in Gheranda Samhita running into eight verses or of Yoni Mudra running into seven verses. In the Hathyoga Pradipika twenty one verses are resolved for describing Kheeari Mudra itself.

Good guidance is necessary if one were to benefit from the Mudras.

looked like a child picking up a pebble on the sea shore, so much more knowledge he was missing. Real knowledge is very vast. One may apparently be studying astronomy and restricting to one area like the Sun but through that one may expand away into the knowledge of the entire planetary system.

The sun here is a symbolic sensitive area of the body known as ‘solar entrance’. Heart is the point of contact between the soul and the body. It is the most sensitive point, the centre of ‘I’ feeling. Hariharananda Aranya has gone into details in his comments on Yoga Sutra III.26.

The cosmic geography and astronomy that is discussed here is so different. It is of cosmic regions (Lokas).

Excerpts of some of the articles in the current issue:

Value of Exercise by Margaretha Heuser
When we hear the word exercise, immediately the pictures of physical movements like at a fitness centre training ourselves with the help of different technical instruments or other kind of sports, aerobic, dance, jogging, etc. appear in our mind. Some of us may even think of Yoga asanas in the same way. By practicing one or the other of the above mentioned methods mindfully, we may experience valuable, healthful outcomes like being more fit, flexible, relaxed and strong….

The Silent Killer by H. Sequeira
High blood pressure attacks nearly 40% of those above 40 years of age. It attacks those who are obese, those who have worry or too much tension, those who are ambitious, the alcoholics and the drug addicts. A rich protein diet, too much smoking, little or no exercise, aggressive behaviour, etc. all contribute to hypertension….
