Magazine - September 2008
Editorial by Dr. Jayadeva Yogendra
Thousands of years back, some individuals were working their way to self control and self knowledge leading to higher states of consciousness. Such Yogie students meeting other such students involved in similar endeavours exchanged notes, and practiced further from what they learnt. They may have formed groups of followers who practiced on wider subjective states in remote lone areas. It may even have happened that Gurukuls and small ashrams grew up there thousand of years back at the turn of the millennium, years back in this country. Based on Yogic studies literature like Yoga sutras, Moksa Parvan, Yoga Vasistha appeared. More material became available and Yoga established itself in Indian culture and philosophy.

However, in course of time more active Yoga practitioners were busy in the spread of the system of Yoga. People not necessarily imbued with the spirit of self culture and spiritual evolution took to yoga for personal name and fame and personal gains. A time came when writers, propagatonists and lay people took over. The traditional practitioners withdrew and were approachable only by the very sincere.

The science and culture of yoga is today in the hands of these publicists and the so called yoga teachers who have moved away from the original traditions of self knowledge, self developmental, self realization that was yoga. Technical virtuosity, exhibitionism have taken over. Removing the chaff from the grain, can only be done by the deligent chelas.

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali by Hansaji
Chapter III Sutra 53

Our usual knowledge is dependent on recognizing different types of things, and their different characteristics and different states of existence. Just like wood or steel has different characteristics like burning or being in different stages like fresh plant and then dried up plant etc. this understanding helps us in our daily interaction.

How do we differentiate humans who are absolutely similar? This is where unusual capacity of discrimination becomes necessary. A Yogi at a particular level of concentration possesses it and is able to distinguish between two similar objects. The emphasis is on heightened concentration and the capacity to understand. This is an achievement that comes to a Yogi after he has reached the final stages of concentration.
