3 Ways to Digital Detox

When life is surrounded by digital media it becomes a challenge to avoid it. Being social animals, this challenge seems even more unattainable. With this gradual change of digital utilisation, we haven’t realised the adverse effects it has on our lives, be it physically, mentally or emotionally. Now, it is time for us to take charge and remain immune to the downward spiral of the virtual world. Today we will discuss 3 ways to Digital Detox.

Before we get to the ways to Digital Detoxification let us understand what exactly we are talking about and why it is a need of the hour.

What is Digital Detoxification?

In simple terms, it is the time when an individual restricts or stops utilising digital devices to interact and build real-life relationships. Earlier you would hear the word detox while looking for some hacks to cleanse your skin and for body healing techniques. Thanks to our addiction to digital media, we have given rise to a whole new business vertical. Here people are trained on how not to overuse digital media and devices.

Do you need a Digital Detox?

How do you know if you too need digital detoxification? If the following symptoms are familiar then it is time you start working on detoxifying your system of the digital virus.

  • Check your phone once every few minutes.
  • Feel stressed if you can’t find your phone.
  • Continuously check for the number of likes, shares, or comments on your latest post on social media.
  • Get anxious when the internet or network connection is disturbed.
  • Fear that you will miss an important update if you don’t keep checking the phone.
  • Unable to concentrate if the phone is not in front of you.

If you checked off more than three of the above points, it is time for you to take action and control your tech addiction and dependency.

Why are you getting addicted?

The answer to that is – Neurotransmitters!

Are you wondering how a neurotransmitter is the cause of your addiction? It’s simple, dopamine an important neurotransmitter controls how your brain sees rewards and pleasures.

Social platforms such as Snapchat, Tik-Tok, etc., or even games like PUB-G use this information to create features that release dopamine. As a result, you get hooked and find it challenging to stop using the app or device.

The Solution

Find alternative activities to trigger the release of the pleasure-seeking neurotransmitter. It is as simple as that.

  • Reward yourself every time you keep technology away while interacting with someone in person.
  • Set reminders to take breaks from screen-time.
  • Go out and enjoy a walk in the park.
