Anemia is a condition in which your body lacks enough healthy red blood cells to function properly. You often feel tired, fatigue, headaches, chest pain, and dizziness. Your hands and feet may become cold. Blood loss, nutritional deficiencies, intestinal disorders, menstruation, pregnancy, and the body’s inability to produce red blood cells often increases the risk of anemia. A healthy diet and lifestyle can help you avoid or better manage your anemic condition.

Iron deficiency is a major cause of anemia. We primarily focus on calcium and protein rich foods, and also the covid -19 pandemic has resulted in a boom in vitamin C demand. But what about iron, which is often forgotten in our diet? Here are some superfoods that can help increase iron, hemoglobin, and folic acid levels in your bloodstream.


  1. Honey

Start your day with a glass of lukewarm water of lemon juice and honey. Honey is an excellent source of iron, copper, and manganese. Vitamin C found in citrus fruits such as lemons, oranges, and sweet lime, helps the blood absorb more iron. You can also consume it by drizzling it over apples and bananas.

  1. Beetroot

Having one glass of beetroot juice daily has proven to cure your anemia. Beets are rich in iron, magnesium, copper and vitamins B1, B2, B6, B12, and C . Beets’ high nutrient content increases the development of red blood cells in the body and improves hemoglobin levels.

  1. Spinach

Spinach is one of the most popular green vegetables for preventing anemia. It contains a high amount of iron. You can either have pureed spinach dishes, spinach salad or blended into a juice. Squeezing a little lemon juice on spinach will help your digestive system break down and absorb iron. Always wash the vegetable thoroughly to remove any germs or pesticides that have been collected on it.

  1. Dates and Raisins

Dates are abundant in iron, calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium, and zinc, as well as folate, vitamin A, vitamin K, and other minerals. Raisins, on the other hand, are high in iron and vitamin C. To enhance your immune system and promote iron absorption, eat them as a snack or with breakfast.

Copper is an important nutrient. According to Ayurveda, drinking water stored in a copper jar aids in the restoration of natural minerals and increases iron levels in the body. It also promotes iron absorption, lowering the risk of anemia. Water should be kept in a copper vessel overnight and consumed throughout the day.

Having a healthy diet that includes all of these superfoods, such as fruits, green vegetables, nuts and seeds, and so on can help manage anemia. Avoid fried, spicy, starchy, and refined sugar-containing foods. In addition, don’t combine iron-rich diets with foods or beverages that inhibit iron absorption. Such as coffee or tea, calcium-rich meals, and foods high in oxalates.

The delivery of oxygen throughout the body is reduced when hemoglobin levels are low. The lungs and heart will have to work harder to supply the necessary oxygen. In addition to a balanced diet, regular practice of asanas and pranayamas improves the lungs’ breathing capacity and thus the oxygen content of red blood cells.

Pranayamas -Yogendra Pranayam IV, Ujjayi, Suryabhedana, Anulom Vilom and Kapalbhatti.

Asana – Trikonasana, Sarvangasana, Paschimottanasana, Viparita-karani and Yoga-Mudra.
