Chapter II Sloka 47

The emphasis in Yoga is always on maintaining a balanced state of mind. In fact, practically speaking, that is the object of Karma Yoga. Any tilting on the side of profit or loss disturbs the balanced state.  So such a person - a Karma Yogi - has no particular interest in the outcome of what he does.  The interest is just in doing that particular work that has come to the individual is part of a larger arrangement of things.  He must have already exerted his wish of getting into that situation.  An engineer comes from a family background, where taking to a career as engineer could be favoured as against taking to teaching or business etc. This choice is made at a very early period by the community, parents, and to a certain extent by the person.  At one time, most people in Karnataka state were interested in becoming engineers; or most people in Gujarat were interested in business.  Now, once this kind of atmosphere exists, the individual does not resist it but readily undergoes the necessary academic training. He also builds up certain expectation and certain company.  So that in the end, if we see that for a person to work as an engineer - there is a lot of work that has gone behind it.  One should have a faith in the whole process.  This is a fixed process and is highly reliable.  As you sow so shall you reap.  And behind this, there is a law, whatever name you give it.  In short, in any work situation, we should create faith in this larger process that has got us to the present situation.  We should not start crying that in this state the industrial relationship is no good and people in this profession are not very ideal.  There are other better ways to work! All these contrary considerations would only create pain and sadness.  So to maintain this awareness and a balanced mind, one should just attend to the work with full sincerity.  This kind of approach does not lead to any mental disturbance.  One just gets involved in the work.  One is balanced and enjoys the work.
