“Yoga talks about faith. When we use the words ‘saints’ and ‘sages’ what’s most outstanding in their personality is their strong faith in God or Higher Reality. Once a person has faith, then all the fear, anxiety, tension, worry goes away because you are not running the whole show. Someone else whom we call higher reality or consciousness or God, etc. they are running the whole show.
The world was there before us and will still remain even after we are gone. The world has its own laws by which it is running. So we have to understand that we just have to do our part in this world. All of us have that strength, that consciousness within us. Everybody is potentially divine. When this is the case, we have to reach our divinity. And for that, we need to understand this material world which is continuously distracting us with all its colours and flavours and attracting us from all sides. Understand the limitations of that world. A single thing can cause both happiness or unhappiness or create confusion. So if we’re running after one, the other comes too. So if this understanding comes, we wont be so attracted by this world. If things are there, use them, if they are not there, learn to live without them.

Saints have nothing to do with the material world. They have understood that this world has nothing but pain and suffering and confusion. Even if they have everything with them, they don’t get attached to those things. One of our students, with his wife, was travelling by the local trains. Someone snatched the wife’s gold chain which had been gifted to her by him on their 25th wedding anniversary. So it was very dear to her so she began crying incessantly. Her husband kept telling her, ‘Your chain is gone, but why are you going away?’ By crying, you will be nowhere. But this understanding becomes very difficult for us that we can even live without that chain. Now that has gone, next time I should be careful not to wear such a chain and travel in public. We should learn our lesson, but not let the material world overpower us in such a way that we stop doing our duty. And then we want others to help us, give us sympathy, someone gives us advise, we develop hatred, etc. Somewhere we get caught up in these things. It doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do our duty, I told her to complain in the police station and after six months, those thieves were caught and the chain recovered, which is rare, but it happened.

We are supposed to do our duty towards the situation. Saints were doing their part in the world. They were part of society. Society would be in chaos but they would be peaceful and full of faith.

I’m sure you know that story where the ship was sinking and everybody was disturbed but one little girl was playing. A priest asked her why she wasn’t scared and she said, ‘Why should I be scared? My father is the captain of this ship.’ She had no fear because she had full faith in her father. So why can’t we keep such a faith in God? Children always have such a faith in their parents. So why can’t we have it for higher reality, that whatever will happen, will be for our own good. My father knows better than me about what is good and bad for me. So this unshakable faith is what is required.

So we should take a decision, that come what may, we will not lose our balance because we are being taken care of. We are being looked after by Nature / Higher Reality. So where is the problem?”

Satsang is an open meeting held every Sunday from 9:30 to 10:30 am at The Yoga Institute, Santacruz East, Mumbai. It involves an interesting presentation to the public, made by the students of the Teacher Training Course. Each week, a new presentation of a Yogic concept is made in a simple way through skits and decoration for the general public, followed by a short speech from our Gurus, Dr. Jayadeva and Smt. Hansaji Yogendra.
