Dr. Jayadeva Yogendra:

“The ultimate in yoga is Samadhi and a removal of the Kleshas. So having completed the first chapter, we talk about these things that the entire effort so far has been to bring in Samadhi and stop the Kleshas. Kleshas are some kind of wrong thoughts; we have seen them earlier. Clearing them makes the mind steady and steadiness brings in understanding. So that’s the sequence.”

Smt. Hansaji J. Yogendra:

“The first sutra of the second chapter was talking of fortitude, gaining more knowledge, self development, self understanding and surrender to the will of the absolute. The second sutra talks on why we should do Tapa, Svadhyaya and Isvara Pranidhana. So the second sutra says that to reach to that blissful stage of Samadhi, you must have the Bhavana of Samadhi first. Your state of mind is balanced, peaceful, full of wisdom because it’s only in this state that wisdom comes. After Samadhi comes discriminative knowledge. A very beautiful stage. Now to reach to that state, what is required is to reduce Klesas because Klesas are the vitiating factors which would not allow your mind to be peaceful. The mind would be full of negative and unnecessary thoughts and we would just be engrossed in our world because of the Klesas. We would not be able to be steadier, more knowledgeable, more peaceful, free from pain and tension, etc. The next two sutras tell us what the Klesas are. So because of Tapa, Svadhyaya and Isvara Pranidhana, Klesas are greatly reduced. So we have to reach that and for that we have to work hard.”
