Q. Is Sayyam possible in present times?
Smt. H: Yoga talks of SayyamDharna, Dhyana and Samadhi. Yoga does not talk about unscientific things. What yoga offers is definitely possible. It’s just that in present times we don’t see any persons on this path and if they are, we don’t know about them. But it definitely is possible.

Q. Sometimes when something wrong happens, what is that? Can miracles be negative also?
Smt. H: Miracles are always positive. A miracle helps in increasing your faith and strength. So you may not use the word miracle when things are going wrong. But when things are going wrong, it is a logic you are using. According to you things are going wrong, but according to Nature they may not be wrong. There was a famous example given in the Puranas that one person dies and everybody is in a negative state and they were asking how could he die? How could we lose him? But there was a sage who was laughing. He asked ‘Why are you crying? You have no idea that this person will this person will be reborn to be a great person who will help humanity to a great extent.’ So this death was so good, otherwise he would have continued with the body for long when humanity needed his help. The point is, from our angle it may be wrong but from Nature’s point of view it may not be wrong. So don’t judge things from the result. Whatever happens, happens for the good, start believing that. There is always a reason behind everything, which we may not understand, but faith can help us progress.

Q. How do you relate yoga and miracles? And can adopting a Yogic lifestyle help miracles to occur?
Smt. H: Very much. Because when you are following the path of yoga, you are automatically level-headed more balanced, more positive. Once you are more positive, you will see more miracles happening in your life.

Q. In yoga, what is the solution to remove anxiety?
Smt. H: Yoga. If you want to get rid of anxiety, follow yoga. Anxiety is about some unknown factor. We are anxious because we don’t know what is going to happen. So the treatment for anxiety is faith that whatever will happen will be for my own good. If we think like that, there is no anxiety. We have taken up topics like this for the very reason that we develop an internal strength and conviction.

Q. Many times in life we cannot find solutions to our problems. What to do then?
Smt. H: Just follow your routines. Eat and sleep on time, walk, do something good, read something good, help others and live your life. If you can’t find a solution, never sit around with the problems looming over your head. The right thing will happen at the right time. Rabindranath Tagore had given an example where a mother is feeding a baby from one breast and then she moves the baby to the other breast. In the meantime the baby cries loudly thinking its milk is gone. But the mother knows better. What happens is that when we lose something, we begin crying about it but we don’t know that something better is in store. Have faith and till clarity doesn’t come, remain happy.

Q. Is help coming in an unknown place from unknown people in an unknown part of the world a miracle or God or both?
Smt. H: We would call it as a miracle because we don’t know where the help has come from and how. One of our students, Mr. Mohan Rao was stuck in the floods in Mumbai like many others. People were holding hands and wading on the streets. When he reached close to his house in Santacruz and took a turn close to Arya Samaj, no one was with him, everyone was going in another direction. The water was up to his chest and there was no one else to help. He was scared and began walking. Then one young man turned up and asked him where Arya Samaj was. And so they walked together. Now you can call this a coincidence or miracle or anything. But help comes when it is needed and if you don’t get it, keep trying on your own. There are many incidents in life where many bad things could have happened but they didn’t. This must have happened at some point or other in all our lives. Learn to be happy in life and increase your faith with these incidents.

Q. Is telepathy a miracle?
Smt. H: Science calls it telepathy but you could also call it a miracle. When you think of someone and the person also thinks of you at the same time, it is telepathy and this must have happened to many of you. There is an example of a newly born baby. The mother was in a very bad state and so they took the baby away from the mother to some foreign land. The mother slowly recovered. But it was found that whenever the mother was hungry, the baby was hungry, when the mother was sad, the baby also cried. Science could not explain such a strong link inspite of the distance between the two. Science called it telepathy or Umbilical Cord connection. But I call it a miracle. There are so many unknown powers in the world that help us. But we should be on the right path. Don’t mix with the wrong kind of people and keep your intentions good. Then miracles will definitely happen.

Satsang is an open meeting held every Sunday from 9:30 to 10:30 am at The Yoga Institute, Santacruz East, Mumbai. It involves an interesting presentation to the public, made by the students of the Teacher Training Course. Each week, a new presentation of a Yogic concept is made in a simple way through skits and decoration for the general public, followed by a short speech from our Gurus, Dr. Jayadeva and Smt. Hansaji Yogendra.
