Pratyahara is to go inwards. This is linked to our state of mind... it's a means to lean towards our consciousness, to exit the external world / stimuli by shutting down our sensory organs namely our eyes, ears, our sense of touch, taste and smell.
Our senses link our inner self with the external world. And they are functioning continuously without a break. We are always alert and aware of whats going on outside and interested to try everything, touch everything, desire to taste / to see everything that exists outside, the question to understand is, how much?

Listen to the audio: Check this out on Chirbit Q. How to be unaffected by the senses in this householder state? Dr. J: One easy way would be to buy ear plugs. It would save you from unnecessary talks. Smt. H: Being a householder does not mean we let go of all discipline. We must do things only when they are necessary. I always say in the pregnancy camp, when parents have a small child, the child will wake up many times at night. Now the child will need its mother as the mother will be feeding it. So the father need not wake up every time. If both wake up, both their sleep will be disturbed and they will start fighting. So the father needs to use ear plugs and sleep. Now householders should have clarity on how much each should be involved. Q. My husband enjoys food, especially one item. He wants to eat that all the time. I am saturated with eating this with him for so many years. Please advise on how to deal with this.

“Depression. Every human being goes through this phase at some or other time of their life. There are many reasons for depression, eg. business is going down, some near and dear one has died, someone close to you starts behaving differently, failure in love affair, you are dependent on somebody and they don’t bother, etc. If we are aware of the reason or cause, we can manage it by developing an understanding of the laws of nature, about human personality, seeing how the world runs and realizing that our problems are nothing and understanding that a person must do their duty in life.

Listen to the audio: Check this out on Chirbit Q. What happens when the husband has an affair and the wife goes into depression when she feels cheated? Dr. J: Don’t discuss. Start action. If there is something that you know (is going wrong) in the situation, try to correct it. Smt. H: When husband is doing something wrong, wife getting into depression is totally wrong. She should continue doing her duty and start the action, find out how to go about bringing sanity into their life and so on if it is possible. Otherwise, at least you maintain your own duty. We have many other roles in life, as a mother, as a daughter, as a member of society and nation. So we should do all those duties and not suffer because of the husband. Q. How can we trust Psychiatrists in today’s world? It may lead to a vicious circle of medicines.

“We need to guide our feelings in the right direction, otherwise they can go haywire and create chaos. Our feelings can be positive or negative. When we love someone, we love them so much that we do not see any weakness / negative trait in that person. On the other hand, when we dislike someone, we are unable to see any positive traits in that person. We have to understand that when we think negative, we harm ourselves first. Therefore we have to be extremely careful that we do not let any negative thought enter our minds. Instead, make a conscious effort to think positive only.

Listen to the audio: Check this out on Chirbit Q. How to overcome the habit of strong likes and dislikes? Dr. J: The simplest answer is, don't like too much. If you like too much then the dislike is too much. Smt. H: Do not get into extremes. My personal opinion is that we have no right to have likes and dislikes. We have to, in any case, accept things as they are. If you dislike something, it is your problem, your blood pressure will go high, you will fall sick. Don't develop likes and dislikes, stay above such things. Q. How to control the worried and restless mind?
Dr. J: These are conditions that come through our own knowledge. They don't just happen. So when they start happening, you can immediately check them.
