Patanjali Yoga Sutra Transcribed from Parisamvad at The Yoga Institute.
Chapter 1, Sutra 21
Tivra-Samveganam-Asannah
Tivra : speedy
Samveganam : momentum , force , speed , urge
Asannah : very close , near
Yogins with intense ardour achieve concentration and the result thereof quickly.
“The question everywhere is, why the results don’t come? Whether it is business, studies or health. We have been told certain things, we do them for a little while, but the results don’t come. We know how people keep changing from one doctor to another, one Yogi to another Yogi. It can go on all our life. The answer is, there is no deep application – Abhyasa and Vairagya – application to that one thing which has been recommended and nothing else. Somehow or the other, results don’t come quick. When you are learning yoga, that kind of a mind has to be there. It is not that you say I want to learn yoga and teach me something. Do we have that kind of a mental set up? We don’t. The mind is restless, it hurries and makes mistakes.
One who has got very deep interest and therefore right application – Abhyasa and Vairagya, for such individuals, success is very easy. You follow your Abhyasa and Vairagya and you succeed in no time. The others keep on trying and trying and trying all their lives and they just don’t reach anywhere. There is a story of devotee of God. He was blind and was thrown out of the house, so he was wandering about. A wise man look pity on him and told him to sit in the temple and repeat the name of God.That blind man was so sincere; he sat at the door of the temple and repeated the name all throughout the day. Naturally he attained God realization. No special tricks and techniques – just that one single thing. We in our lives must have visited so many temples, so many Gurus, received so much advice and we are just where we are. Are we really interested in reaching somewhere or just playfully we come across some technique and want to try it? We need to answer these questions.”
“When a person is totally established on the path of yoga with total clarity, then he doesn’t think about hurdles. He has understood where he has to reach, so he reaches his destination fast. Business, family will all go on – yoga doesn’t say stop all these things. Instead, we would have a strong awareness and be able to handle every ups and downs with a level-headed mind and without reacting. We learn from situations, we don not run away or breakdown. We don’t commit the same mistakes again and again. We don’t get affected by the behavior of others. To live every moment happily is the highest Bhakti. Wherever you put your mind and effort in that area, you will progress. We understand what life is, how people are and we put in our efforts.”
